How You Can Overcome the Derailing Effects of Work Pressure
My 7-year old son Aanchman is very outgoing; he makes friends easily, loves crafting and makes origami at leisure. So, whenever he had pressure in finishing home task, takes break for 10 min to follow his passion of making origami before he could finish his daily home task without aberration. He feels it is an excellent way of busting stress or pressure without even knowing the definition of stress.
My first learning out of his approach towards completion of task is to learn how to subordinate pressure or stress before it start bothering you, check the barometer of pressure at work, chill out for a moment and get back to work. It will improve upshot by many folds flawlessly.Take short breaks to de-stress whenever you can. Take a little walk outside, listen to music or do some stretching exercises at your desk.
In today’s high-pressure world work-life balance initiatives are increasingly becoming the buzz phrase indeed. Complexes and volatile work structure exerts a lot of pressure on the employees to perform and manifests into a deadline-driven work life which in turn translates to longer work hours and steer derailing effect of work pressure.At times, we tend to look back at the day gone by, and question ourselves – did I do justice to my time, meaningless you would never get your yesterday again.
In reality, employees who wants to deliver their best work in 50 hours in a week, 25% of their working spirits goes into daily commuting clogged traffics coupled with commuters woes, perhapspeople who work in Mumbai can connect better with this statement.
On the top of that the real challenge comes when you want to convince yourself that you don’t like it, the task doesn’t entice you at all, and your brain takes double the pain to complete the task. It won’t be wise choice of becoming a clock watcher it’s better to maintain balance by tweaking tasks at times.
Good to know that your stress goes up so as your heart’s FOC and HR which increase risk of tachycardia and MI. The crisis triggers the release of certain adrenalin hormones promotes constriction of blood vessels further decreases blood supply to brain and other important organs. This builds illusion of fear of failure, victimization of work load etc.In such kind of wishy-washy you may find yourself dragged into an interruption against your will, provoking resentment and frustration.
My 7 year old son follows convincing method of showing the progress in given task. He says,
“Can’t you see papa I am busy right now”. He does so politely and without fuss.
Don’t allow this to ride on your shoulder else you will burn out your energy. It may also help stave off an interruption in your work if you give a brief description of what you’re currently working on.
What to do?
Understand your priority of the hour is essential, hence you can use a piece of paper divide into 16 blocks to delineate task for every hours.
Differentiate Must, Should, Can, Would in task completion. Don’t allow people to chuck in to your workstation out of their turn. Don’t listen to people just blindly on how much time you think you’ll need for a task makes you pigeonhole your ability as the person who always says it take two hours when it really takes one hour.
Interruptions will probably invariably exist be a way of life to some extent, but you have to be master in managing it tactically. It’s critical to stay focus on your priorities and deliver result, so, stay awake in accepting accountability of finishing task on time. You must learn to refuse verbal requests or visits from other employees who try to skip using the system.
Cultivate allies at work to build a congenial socialization to not to juggling task which ended up with below expected result. Avoid being trapped into 5 A’s like apathy, anger, anxiety, alienation and absenteeism.
Find humor in situation, share joke in social tool to bring laughter at workplace.Indulge yourself – Exploit a holiday by indulging in an outdoor activity.Give incentive to yourself; go for vacation at weekend which promotes self- renewal. Increase Para-sympathetic drive and boost empathy.
Fight through the clutter. Taking the time to organization your workspace can help ease the sense of losing control that comes from too much clutter and reduce workplace hibernation.
Celebrate your success in completing micro task on time. I witnessed my son celebrates his micro task completion success very often to keep upbeat for the next task. Yes, it drains couple of chocolates to be given as incentive for the next task.
