Helping Employees Manage Stress
How Stress Affects Organizations: The need to ‘outperform’ in today’s ever changing global scenario has seen an alarming rise inissues pertaining to stress and mental wellness. The implications are widespread and affecting not only individuals, but also seem to have a profound effect on organizationsand the social world. If the issues are left unaddressed for a longer period they have a negative impact on the well- being of the individual. Prolonged Stress affects a person’s thought process, actions and behavior and in some cases may lead to severe depression and anxiety.
Even though problems may arise due to various personal and social factors, workplace is one of the major source of stress for individuals leading to several psychological and physiological problems creating chaos in an individual’s life. This maycomprise work overload, lack of recognition, a lack of participation in decision-making processes, lack of resources, conflict, interpersonal issues, role ambiguity, a sense of stagnation etc. Various personal factors such as family issues, instable relationships and other socio- economic factors may add to these, thus disturbing the equilibrium and can lead to absenteeism, grievances, lower quality and productivity at the workplace.
What Can Be Done:Organizations can devise and implement effective prevention strategies by making an in-depth analysis of the situation at their respective workplaces. Employee surveys and Questionnaires can be a valuable source of information to design and develop wellness programs for the employees. Team meetings can serve as a great platform to stimulate dialogue and discuss existing issues in the organization. Involving employees in information sharing activities such as publishing articles in monthly newsletters emphasizing on mental and physical wellness could prove beneficial in leading employees to modify desired behaviors and promote a culture of holistic living. Mandatory regular health checkups, employee assistance programs, de-stress camps, stress management workshops and family get-togethers can be integrated into the company culture. A structured and a dedicated working group or committee can be formed to ensure implementation of strategies and to evaluate the results of the strategies on a regular basis in order to formulate new action plans accordingly. After all,‘A Happy Employee is A Productive Employee’!
